Ngai te Apatu

I am a mother of two adult children and two mokopuna (grandchildren). I live within the beautiful Hawke's Bay area of New Zealand. I am a midwife/nurse by profession and in my spare time I like to use my creative side in the art of Harakeke (flaxing).

At the age of eleven I was taught the art of kete making and my grandfather, the late Laddie Tamati of Wairoa-Ngai Te Apatu, had inspired and encouraged me to continue the art because very few wahine (women) make kete. During the last two years I have put more focus on making these small kete, adorning them with pieces of paua shell which are symbolic of old and contemporary Maori art.
