Paula, who paints under the name Istra, is based in Waitakery City. She works mainly in Acrylic watercolor on canvas and has exhibited in Taranaki, Wellington, Auckland and Northland. As well as private regular work she has been commissioned to create conceptual works for the fashion industry, panels for movies and illustrations for calendars and several children's books.
Paula seeks to bring out the inner light of her subjects whether it is portraits, landscapes, native trees and flowers or customised works such as murals designed to compliment the room they are to be displayed in.
Those who commission her for portraits of themselves, their children or grandchildren, are often brought to tears by the true likeness she captures on canvas after consulting and carefully studying a collage of photographs, either supplied by the subject of taken at her studio.
Paula specialises in taking more adventurous clients into the realm of their own fantasies, capturing them in a realistic or customised environment of their choosing, even depicting them as if they were in another era or idealised within their own favourite dreamscape Paula has the rare ability of being able to capture the human form from the sensual sweeping lines of the body to the intricate detail and beauty of the face which reveals the individual personality.
Paula's studio is located in the bush and she has taken every opportunity to study and capture on canvas a range of flora and fauna including native nikau palms, kowhai and pohutukawa. She loves the brilliant color and textures of nature which is evident in many of her works.
Kiwiartz is exhibiting only a selected range of Paula's art, which fits with our theme of promoting art which captures the colors,ambience and characters of the cultures, landscapes and people of New Zealand and elsewhere in the South Pacific.
