Kia Ora & Welcome!

Susan Haywood-Smith
Through my art, I desire for the viewer to share in my experience of the beauty of Pacific Island cultures, Aotearoa and their people, and to discover the story within each piece.

The Polynesian simplification of form such as the Tivaevae quilts, Kowhaiwhai designs and Tukutuku panels, alongside my celtic lineage and affiliations through marriage with the Te Arawa Tribe, have impressed upon me the beauty of strong simple lines.

My subject matter has also been influenced by my deep love of nature. I choose images that I strongly associate with the subtropical environment of my upbringing, such as the Hibiscus and Frangipani flowers. The colour red is a constant theme throughout my work, reflecting my passion for the South Pacific and its people.

My previous prints have incorporated strong historical themes such as a series based on the Treaty of Waitangi. This reflects my interest and previous studies undertaken in Social History.

On a subconscious level the subject matter of my artwork is a direct reflection of my own personal history. This history is derived from my experience of being a Pakeha raised in South Auckland. With no link to my own Irish/English heritage to make reference to, I absorbed the wonderfully rich culture of the Maori and Pacific Islanders around me. This was reinforced by my family ties to the Te Arawa Iwi.

Today, I am still reconciling the two worlds of my British lineage alongside my experience of Maoridom, and have yet to determine the point of intersection at which I am placed. However my art allows me to work through this dichotomy from which I hope to create powerful and stirring New Zealand artwork.

Description:

This artwork is an original Giclée print. Giclée comes from a French word meaning to "spray" a liquid. The term “Giclée print" makes reference to the creation of fine art using ink jet as the method of printing. With today’s advanced technology exceptional quality prints are able to be created that are colour fast and of an archival quality.
The method in which I have created my Giclée prints is to scan artwork created using traditional printmaking techniques and then modify the artwork with computer software. I have chosen to use traditionally printed artwork as the base from which I start in order to retain a raw printerly quality to my Giclée prints.
