KORU
Below are descriptions of some common forms of koru design.
   

Round Koru -The fern frond represents life, new beginnings, life unfolding. The stylization of the Koru in its many represents the spirit of rejuvenation.
   


Double Koru
The stylization of the two unfolding fern fronds symbolize the bonding within a family. As each frond unfolds to leave the protective circle, it reaches out for new life, new growth and so reflects the life cycle.

   

Oval Koru
The juvenile koru is surrounded and protected by the mature fronds.
   
    Hei-Matua - Fish Hook
Represents strength and determination. It brings peace, prosperity, abundance and good luck. It also provides a safe journey over water.
   

Koru Hook
Combining the koru and the hook suggests new beginnings,happiness and good luck.
   

Gorge Hook
There are many varieties on the shape of the "Hei Matau". The Gorge hook is one of those variations of the ever popular fish hook pendants. The meanings given to the fish hook, in its many forms, is that it represents strength and determination. It is said to bring peace, prosperity and good luck to the wearer. It also that it provides safe journey over water.
   

Figure eight
For many this symbolizes good luck. It is also called the LOVE KNOT.
   

Double Twist
The intricate double twist resembles timelessness. No beginning- no end.
   
    Triple twist
The criss-cross shape represents the PATH of LIFE, which is seen to contain many different situations. ( i.e. the ups and downs of life.) People and different cultures are bonded by friendship and loyalty. ( A pointed heel indicates steadfastness and determination to achieve.)
   

Oval Twist and Round Twist
Derived from the figure of eight, it symbolizes good luck and happiness.
   
   
    Kawiriwiri - ( Intertwined )
Symbolizes the CIRCLE OF LIFE; the joining of two people or two cultures. Loyalty and friendship giving the enduring quality.
   
    Hei Toroa - Whale's tail
Symbolizes the quiet strength and endurability of these spectacular icons of the oceans.
